Jan got involved with orchids in 1979 through one plant ( a large white cattleya from a florist)
which we boarded at Brecht’s Garden Center in Costa Mesa. After several years it bloomed. She
then joined Newport Harbor Orchid Society in Newport Beach, CA about 1985. Jan sucked me
into orchids about 1986 and the next thing I knew I was on the Board of NHOS. In 1998 I was
elected President and served for 2 years, then First VP for 2 years, and finally membership
secretary. We moved to Cornelius Oregon in 2006 and joined the Oregon Orchid Society and the
Portland Orchid Society.
In 2018 we moved back to Orange County and rejoined the Orange County Orchid Society and
Newport Harbor Orchid society. Within months I was asked to be president of the OCOS and I
agreed. Things were fine for the first year and then Covid hit. We continued our meetings via
Zoom and only lost a few members. During the COVID pandemic we lost our meeting place at
the Yorba Linda library, but I was able to secure a new meeting place at the Yorba Linda
Community Center at a lower monthly rate and with better facilities. Yorba Linda CC held the
space open until COVID diminished, and our first in-person meeting was my last as President
after my 2 year term.
Over the years, we have tried to include orchids in our travels, including: attending a meeting in
Montreal ( all in French), clerking at the New York show which was held in the facility later
demolished in 9/11, visiting our first World Orchid Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, clerking at
a large regional show at the University of Canterbury in England, and touring the growing area
of the famous French phalaenopsis breeder Vaucherot and Lecoufle in France.
I am honored to be asked to serve the San Francisco Orchid Society which I believe is one of
the premier orchid societies in the country. I will do my best to serve this fine group.
