Speaker: Daniel Geiger
Topic: Orchid Systematics 101

Daniel Geiger has grown orchids for approximately 20 years. He specializes in the genus Oberonia, on which he has written a dozen scientific papers, plus several popular accounts. He is.past member and chair of the AOS Research Committee, and has served as guest editor of the journal Rheedea for a special issue on orchid systematics. He has described over 100 species (mostly mollusks, a few fish, one crab, one orchid), synonymized about the same number (mostly orchids, some mollusks), and has ten species (including one orchid: Dendrochilum geigeri) and one genus named after him. He is known for his microphotography and scanning electron microscopy.
He has recently retired as curator of malacology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and is currently preparing a global monograph of the genus Oberonia, estimated to be published in 2027 through AOS. His previous monographs on abalone (Geiger & Poppe, 2000; Geiger & Owen, 2012) and little slit shells (Geiger, 2012) have been well received in the scientific community.
In his spare time Daniel enjoys making jams and marmalades, playing the viola d’amore (honorary member of the International Viola d’amore Society), wood working and wood turning, and teaching yoga.
