How to pursue AOS judging credentials in the Bay Area — and how SFOS can help you get there.
Why Pursue AOS Judging Credentials?
American Orchid Society (AOS) accreditation is the gold standard for orchid judging in North America. Accredited judges evaluate plants at shows nationwide, contribute to the AOS awards database, and play a critical role in documenting exceptional orchid cultivars for posterity. For serious growers, it represents the deepest possible engagement with the hobby.
The Bay Area is an excellent place to pursue judging credentials. SFOS produces two major AOS-judged shows each year — the Pacific Orchid Exposition and Orchids in the Park — giving prospective judges consistent access to judging sessions without traveling out of state.
The Path to AOS Accreditation
Become an AOS Member
AOS membership is a prerequisite for the judging program. SFOS members often join both organizations to access the full range of resources and judging opportunities.
Attend Judging Sessions
Prospective judges are required to attend a minimum number of judging sessions as observers. SFOS shows — including OITP and POE — provide regular judging opportunities in the Bay Area.
Complete the Student Judge Program
The AOS Student Judge program involves written examinations, oral evaluations, and supervised judging. SFOS members who are AOS judges serve as mentors and can guide you through the process.
Pass Accreditation Exams
Written and practical examinations cover orchid taxonomy, culture, and judging criteria. The SFOS library and experienced member judges are invaluable resources for exam preparation.
How SFOS Supports Aspiring Judges
SFOS has a long history of producing AOS-accredited judges. Our membership includes active judges who regularly mentor aspiring candidates, and our shows provide the judging sessions required for accreditation.
